Every day around 1,700 people die in England and Wales; very few of them ever die in dental surgeries. Sadly, death in the dental practice is newsworthy but highly stressful for staff and upsetting for relatives of the deceased, irrespective of the cause of death. Furthermore, there is a perception amongst the public that dentists and their nurses are ‘medical’ and will therefore know what to do in the event of an emergency. They also expect the surgery to have the right drugs and equipment to deal with common emergencies.
